Frame Repair and Restoration

Some general information must be stated upfront :

(1) Frames made from a plastic type material require a clean cut of new material to re-glue

(2) Metal frames must be resized or sections replaced

Some metal frames are made with pressed corners (not repairable)

(3) Frame made of MDF must a clean area to rejoin

Wood Frame

Wood frames can be rejoined if the all corners are in tack or if the frame can be cut down to allow fresh corners

In most cases all four must be cleaned to allow a good glue surface.

If the frame has broken "compo" designs they will require one good corner to use for casting, base for carving or available in compo design from a moulding supplier.

Metal Leaf Frames

Most metal leaf frames  require re-leafing in-order for the finish to match.  The reason for this is most metal leaf frames are made with "hot" leaf which if almost impossible to match with sheet metal leaf.

A patch will always show under light and the edges will not blend into the old finish.

Changing the Finish on the frame.

The finish on the frame can be changed if a undercoat can be placed on the frame. Most frames today have a synthetic coating placed as a top coat which must be removed in-order to get to the wood.  In some cases a "tone" coat can be applied over the finish if it is not damaged.

Metal Frames

They can be rejoined with new corner hardware if the corner is not damaged. Most damaged corner can not be repaired and the section must be replaced. Metal frames may be cut down to a smaller size.
